Podiatry

What is Podiatry

Podiatry is a relatively new healthcare specialty in Greece, dedicated exclusively to the foot and lower limb. It is suitable for people of all ages and focuses specifically on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of foot-related conditions.

At any stage of life, the human foot can become a source of discomfort or dysfunction. Common issues include skin and nail disorders, corns and calluses, foot pain, as well as problems affecting the ankles, knees, and lower back.

In some cases, systemic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes can also lead to serious complications in the feet, requiring specialised podiatric assessment and care.

Patients can visit a podiatrist at their clinic by appointment. Podiatrists frequently collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including physiatrists, orthopaedic consultants, diabetologists, rheumatologists, and physiotherapists. Referrals are often made for comprehensive assessment, ensuring prompt, coordinated, and effective treatment of the underlying problem.

Podiatry is significantly different from a basic pedicure, spa treatment, or routine foot care. It is a clinical, healthcare-based service that focuses on medical assessment and targeted treatment. The primary goal is not only to relieve symptoms but also to maintain mobility, function, and overall quality of life.

Education and professional training

All podiatrists are registered with the national Podiatrists’ Association and have graduated from recognised European universities with accredited undergraduate degrees (BSc Hons) in podiatry. In most cases, podiatrists also hold a postgraduate qualification (MSc) specialising in a specific area, such as sports injuries, diabetic foot care, or other advanced fields of podiatric medicine.

Warning! Be cautious of individuals who call themselves podiatrists after attending only a few hours of short courses or seminars. These programs do not provide the scientific training and expertise required to practise true podiatry.

First podiatry appointment

Your first podiatry appointment is a crucial step towards healthy, pain-free feet. Whether you come with a referral from your doctor or independently, a qualified podiatrist will take a thorough medical and foot history. You’ll be asked detailed questions about your current foot condition, previous injuries, and overall health. This in-depth consultation allows the podiatrist to understand the root cause of your foot problem and tailor a treatment plan specifically for you.

During the clinical foot examination, the podiatrist will carefully assess your feet for any bone, skin, nail, or structural abnormalities. Key factors evaluated include foot temperature, skin health, sensation, joint mobility, and toe function—essential elements for maintaining proper foot function and overall mobility.

After collecting all the necessary information, the podiatrist will provide a personalised treatment plan, explaining the recommended therapy, its duration, and associated costs. Early assessment and intervention can prevent further complications, reduce pain, and help you stay active and mobile.

What conditions does a podiatrist treat?

The primary goal of a podiatrist is to improve the health and function of your feet. Beyond treating existing foot problems, a podiatrist also focuses on protection, prevention, and correction to maintain long-term foot health.

Protection: Certain foot conditions can lead to wounds, pus, or other potential sources of infection, which may result in serious complications. Using specialised techniques and a wide range of professional materials, the podiatrist will carefully clean, treat, and protect your feet. Additionally, you will receive guidance on how to protect your feet daily at home to avoid further problems.

Prevention: Prevention is undoubtedly the most effective form of treatment. Your podiatrist will provide advice on proper footwear, posture, and foot care to help prevent or reduce the risk of issues such as painful metatarsals, tendonitis, heel spurs, bunions, and other common foot problems.

Correction: Some conditions require long-term treatment with custom foot orthotics. In these cases, patients return to the podiatrist for follow-up assessments. Based on progress, the orthotics may be adjusted and re-applied to ensure continued improvement and optimal foot function.

It is important to note that during the course of treatment, if necessary, the podiatrist will communicate directly with your referring physician or other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated care and the most effective treatment plan.

How long does Podiatic treatment take?

The duration of podiatry treatment depends on the type and severity of the foot condition. In many cases, just a few visits are sufficient to resolve the problem. However, some conditions may require additional appointments for full recovery.

The good news is that during your very first consultation, Mr. Dimou will provide an initial assessment of your condition and give you a clear estimate of how many visits are likely needed to achieve the best results.

How much does a Podiatry appointment cost?

The consultation fee remains consistent for each visit. If your treatment requires custom orthotics, the cost will be adjusted according to the number of orthotic pairs ordered.

“I am an American athlete playing volleyball in Greece. Last year I had surgery on my shoulder and this is my first season playing again. I had been to the office a couple years before just for adjustments but came back this year for my shoulder. I was getting treatment and adjustments for a few weeks and they got my shoulder feeling better then it had before my surgery. I was able to sleep on my shoulder for the first time in almost 4 years. They are the greatest people and I will forever be a patient when I am in Greece!”

“I cannot recommend Vaggelis highly enough. His attention to my extremely complicated foot issue was absolute and dedicated, ruling out steadily all the possible causes, even at a distance since I live so far from Athens. The insoles he made for me helped hugely with the metatarsal pain I was getting too. However, over time it became apparent that there was something more serious happening, which he narrowed down to a neurological disorder. Following his referral to a neurologist, I spent the next 3 months going through a whole series of tests which confirmed that I have a very rare neurological disorder causing demyelination of the nerve sheath. The symptoms are often confused with many other problems, so it is notoriously difficult to diagnose. Had Vaggelis not referred me as soon as he realised this, I would not be at the point of now receiving treatment and hopefully on the long road to recovery. I am so very grateful to him. He is also an extremely nice person!”
