Chiropractic and Podiatry in Sport

Sports

Chiropractic and Podiatry are two healthcare disciplines closely linked to the treatment and rehabilitation of sports injuries and activity-related musculoskeletal conditions. Many athletes seek Podiatric and Chiropractic care not only for injury recovery, but also for ongoing physical maintenance, injury prevention and performance enhancement.

Our clinic works daily with both amateur and professional athletes across a wide range of sports. We most frequently support competitors involved in athletics (track and field), football, basketball, tennis and volleyball. Below you will find an overview of Mr. Dimou’ professional collaborations with teams, clubs, voluntary sports initiatives and individual athletes.

Olympic and Paralympic games

Paris 2024 Paralympic Games

In August 2024, Mr Evagelos Dimou travelled to Paris to attend the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games as a member of the medical team of the Hellenic Paralympic Mission. He provided chiropractic care to all Greek Paralympic athletes, both within the Olympic Village and at the official competition venues. He accompanied the Greek teams in Boccia, Blind Judo and Swimming, supporting the athletes throughout their preparation and competition schedules, helping them achieve their performance goals at the highest international level.

Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games

In August 2021, he participated in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Paralympic Games as part of the Hellenic Paralympic delegation. He worked closely with the Boccia team, supporting both training sessions and competitive events. In addition to providing clinical support, he assisted with administrative responsibilities within the Olympic Village and collaborated with the leadership of the Greek Paralympic team, contributing to the smooth operation of the medical and support services.

Athens 2011 - Special Olympics World Summer Games

In June 2011, he volunteered at the Special Olympics World Summer Games, held in Athens from 21 June to 4 July 2011. As a member of the medical “Fit Feet” team, he served as a podiatrist responsible for the assessment and treatment of lower limb injuries in athletes with intellectual disabilities, supporting their participation in this major international sporting event.

Athens 2004 Olympic Games

Mr. Dimou also actively participated as a volunteer at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. He served as a First Aid Responder stationed within the Olympic Stadium. From the Opening Ceremony through to the Closing Ceremony, he was assigned to a first aid station in the spectator stands, providing emergency care and assistance to members of the public attending the Olympic Games.

Unforgettable and life-changing experiences

The Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Paralympic Games remain among the most powerful and unforgettable professional experiences of his career. Working alongside Paralympic athletes was a uniquely inspiring and deeply moving experience. These athletes are not simply competitors, they are true role models of strength, resilience and determination.

Professional Football

Panathinaikos FC

For the first time in Greece, Chiropractic care entered professional football during the 2015–2016 season. Mr Evagelos Dimou signed a contract with Panathinaikos FC and joined the club’s medical team.

He worked alongside the team doctors Kouloumentas Panagiotis and Charalambidis Stathis, physiotherapist Oikonomidis Vasilis, and other members of the medical staff. Mr Evagelos Dimou visited the Georgios Kalafatis Training Centre in Koropi on a weekly basis, where players underwent detailed assessment. In combination with established medical and physiotherapy protocols, selective spinal adjustments and specialised chiropractic manipulations were applied to the spine and extremities of the footballers.

In the field of Sports Podiatry, his contribution was equally significant. All players — including every new transfer — underwent both static and dynamic plantar pressure (gait) analysis. Depending on the findings, athletes were provided with custom-made orthotic insoles for both football boots and everyday footwear.

The ultimate goal of this integrated approach was to correct biomechanical imbalances, redistribute plantar loading, support injury rehabilitation and reduce the risk of future injuries. His collaboration was extended for the 2016–2017 season and concluded following a complete restructuring of the club’s medical department.

After six successful years with Olympiacos FC (2018–2023), Mr Evagelos Dimou returned to Panathinaikos FC in June 2024 for the 2024–2025 season, working alongside team doctor Panagiotis Alexandropoulos. His contract was renewed and extended for the 2025–2026 season under the leadership of head doctors Dionysios Chissas and Theoxaris Lalos.

Mr Evagelos Dimou continues to visit the training centre on a weekly basis, as he has done for more than ten consecutive years, establishing himself within the elite level of professional football through dedication and professionalism.

Olympiacos FC

In January 2018, Mr Evagelos Dimou joined the medical team of Olympiacos FC as Chiropractor and Podiatrist, under the guidance and supervision of the team doctor Christos Theos and physiotherapist Nikos Lykouresis.

He visited the Renti Training Centre weekly, providing chiropractic treatment and podiatric care to all players. In addition, footballers had access to his Chiropractic and Podiatry Centre in Glyfada for specialised spinal care and the manufacture of custom orthotic insoles.

The collaboration with Olympiacos FC concluded at Christmas 2023 following the departure of the head team doctor, Christos Theos.

Omonia Cyprus FC

During the 2009–2010 season, Mr Evagelos Dimou served as a scientific associate of the medical team of Omonia Cyprus FC. Under head coach Takis Lemonis, and alongside a highly organised medical staff, he travelled to Nicosia every two weeks throughout the season to provide podiatric assessment and monitoring for all professional footballers.

Volleyball

In November 2011, Evagelos Dimou began a collaboration with the Panhellenic Association of Paid Volleyball Players (PASAP). As part of this partnership, he became an official external associate of the organisation. Registered male and female volleyball players of PASAP attended the Chiropractic & Podiatry Centre for musculoskeletal rehabilitation and custom orthotic insoles following plantar pressure assessments.

Since 2009, Evagelos Dimou has been collaborating with the women’s volleyball team of Markopoulo, as well as all the volleyball academies of the club. Assessments and plantar pressure analyses take place at the Markopoulo stadium, and athletes are provided with orthotic insoles to address previous injuries or for injury prevention.

From 2007 to the present, Evagelos Dimou remains an external collaborator for both the men’s and women’s volleyball teams of Panathinaikos FC and Olympiacos FC. Each year, athletes receive podiatric care through plantar assessments and custom insoles, as well as chiropractic interventions including spinal adjustments and stretching techniques. This integrated approach supports injury rehabilitation, ongoing maintenance, and injury prevention.

Basketball

Μπάσκετ Κ.Α.Ε Πανιωνίου

Evagelos Dimou served as a scientific associate for the Basketball K.A.E. Panionios team during the 2012–2013 season, and his collaboration continued through the 2013–2014 season. Players of Panionios underwent detailed podiatric assessments and received custom orthotic insoles following plantar pressure analysis. This care was designed for the maintenance, prevention, and treatment of mechanical and skeletal issues in the lower limbs, issues that often affect spinal mechanics and can lead to injuries.

Volunteer Activities

Since October 2012, Evagelos Dimou has been running a highly successful volunteer campaign to raise awareness about podiatry in sports and to educate parents about foot health. This initiative offers free plantar pressure assessments and gait analysis to young athletes in football, basketball, tennis, volleyball, swimming, and table tennis academies, both within and outside the Athens metropolitan area. Working closely with each team’s management, coaches, and trainers, Mr. Dimou regularly visits sports facilities to conduct foot screenings and kinetic gait analyses for all athletes.

The goal of these assessments is to identify anatomical and mechanical issues in the lower limbs, including flat feet, high arches, leg length discrepancies, and more. Left uncorrected, these problems can often lead to injuries such as sprains, tendonitis, muscle strains, heel or knee pain, lower back discomfort, premature fatigue, and reduced performance. Athletes found to have mechanical issues are provided with a pair of custom orthotic insoles for maintenance, injury prevention, or treatment.

Some of the clubs, schools, and sports academies already assessed include: Markopoulo, Gerakas, Spata, Aiantas Evosmou Thessaloniki, Artemida, Athinaikos, Mikti Athinon, Athletic Club P.E.R.A., Chalandri, Amyntas Dafnis, A.O. Stylidas, G.A.S. Pavvochaikos, 1st Primary School of Alimos, DES (Interactive European School), and many more.

Individual Athletes

In 2021, Evagelos Dimou met the rising star of Greek tennis, Rafael Pagonis. Today, at just 14 years old, Rafael is already a Greek and European tennis champion, receiving chiropractic and podiatry care to enhance performance and prevent injuries associated with high-level sports. As Rafael’s personal chiropractor, Mr. Dimou provides regular sessions and custom orthotic insoles, tailored to the demands of tournaments and competitive schedules.

Since 2014, Evagelos Dimou has also been the personal chiropractor of Gregoris Polychronidis, the 2012 London Paralympic gold medallist, and his wife and assistant, Katerina Patroni. Active since 2002, Polychronidis has won 22 gold, 12 silver, and 19 bronze medals at Olympic, European, and World levels. His mobility challenges and disability require continuous attention, and Mr. Dimou provides systematic chiropractic care either at the Athens chiropractic centre or during international competitions. He has accompanied the Polychronidis couple to global and European events — from Paris, Liverpool, and Seville to Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro, consistently ensuring the highest level of chiropractic support.

Evagelos Dimou also had the honour of working alongside the late Olympic taekwondo champion Alexandros Nikolaidis during his preparation for the London 2012 Olympic Games. From January to August 2012, and throughout the rest of Nikolaidis’ career, Mr. Dimou, as his personal chiropractor, provided weekly chiropractic and podiatry sessions. The primary focus was on injury prevention and rehabilitation, using spinal and extremity adjustments to enhance performance. Eternal respect and memory to the beloved friend, Alexandros.

“I am an American athlete playing volleyball in Greece. Last year I had surgery on my shoulder and this is my first season playing again. I had been to the office a couple years before just for adjustments but came back this year for my shoulder. I was getting treatment and adjustments for a few weeks and they got my shoulder feeling better then it had before my surgery. I was able to sleep on my shoulder for the first time in almost 4 years. They are the greatest people and I will forever be a patient when I am in Greece!”

“I cannot recommend Vaggelis highly enough. His attention to my extremely complicated foot issue was absolute and dedicated, ruling out steadily all the possible causes, even at a distance since I live so far from Athens. The insoles he made for me helped hugely with the metatarsal pain I was getting too. However, over time it became apparent that there was something more serious happening, which he narrowed down to a neurological disorder. Following his referral to a neurologist, I spent the next 3 months going through a whole series of tests which confirmed that I have a very rare neurological disorder causing demyelination of the nerve sheath. The symptoms are often confused with many other problems, so it is notoriously difficult to diagnose. Had Vaggelis not referred me as soon as he realised this, I would not be at the point of now receiving treatment and hopefully on the long road to recovery. I am so very grateful to him. He is also an extremely nice person!”
